Landscape Intern

Objective: Interns understand the organization, its business, culture, and where the Landscape function fits within it.Topics: Introduction to the company's profile, structure, and products/services, along with its culture and values, giving interns the context needed to see how Landscape contributes to the visitor experience and site aesthetics.Activities: Department/site visits or shadowing sessions, Q&A with Landscape team members, orientation quiz or reflection write-up.

Objective: Interns understand the theory and frameworks behind each part of their specific job description before executing it.Topics: Core landscape theory covering site assessment and survey methods, plant species and hardscape material selection principles, sustainability considerations in landscape design, and landscape project documentation standards.Activities: Case study discussions, review of sample landscape project plans, mock site survey exercise.

Objective: Apply site survey theory to real landscape locations.Tasks: Conduct site assessments, field measurements, and data collection to support landscape design and maintenance planning.Output: A completed site assessment report for an assigned area, including measurements and recommendations.

Objective: Apply selection criteria to real landscape planning decisions.Tasks: Support the selection of plant species, hardscape materials, and other landscape elements, considering aesthetics, functionality, and sustainability.Output: A material/plant selection proposal for an assigned project area.

Objective: Ensure landscape work meets project and quality standards.Tasks: Monitor landscape installation and maintenance activities to ensure alignment with project plans, quality standards, and operational requirements.Output: A monitoring log tracking installation/maintenance progress against project plans.

Objective: Independently support a small landscape project from assessment to completion, integrating everything learned.Tasks: Support a landscape project end-to-end (assessment, design input, monitoring), prepare project documentation and progress reports, and present a mini case study of the project supported.Output: Final presentation covering the landscape project they supported, plus a reflection on lessons learned and recommendations for continuous landscape improvement, this can double as their internship report closing material.
