Chemical Process Engineer Intern

Activities / Skills • Company & Business Process: Attend corporate induction and onboarding sessions; understand the organisational structure, the division of responsibilities between disciplines and the full engineering workflow — feasibility study, basic design, detailed design, procurement support and site services. • Codes & Standards: Study chemical engineering fundamentals — material and heat balances, unit operations, thermodynamics — together with the design code system; understand how national, industry and corporate standards relate to each other and where each applies. • Software Familiarization: Become familiar with the software environment used in the institute: process simulators (Aspen Plus / HYSYS), AutoCAD, in-house calculation templates and the document management system.

Activities / Skills • Document Reading: Understand the division of labour between PFDs and P&IDs and the difference in what each expresses; trace material flow, utility tie-in points and the main control scheme. • Process Simulation: Build a basic flowsheet in Aspen Plus / HYSYS, select an appropriate property method (e.g. PR, SRK, NRTL), converge the model and verify that the results are physically reasonable. • Documentation: Prepare material balance, heat balance and utility consumption tables, with the key assumptions stated.

Activities / Skills • Drafting: Learn the numbering rules for equipment tags, line numbers and piping classes; under mentor supervision draft the P&ID of one unit, including the main control loops and interlock indications. • Equipment Sizing: Perform process sizing for pumps (flow, head, NPSH), heat exchangers (duty, LMTD, area), columns (theoretical stages, reflux ratio) and vessels (volume, residence time). • Design Tools: Use AutoCAD fluently for process drawings, including layers, title blocks and plotting standards.

Activities / Skills • Hydraulic Calculation: Perform pressure drop calculations and line sizing; establish control valve pressure drop and sizing conditions; contribute to the preliminary determination of relief loads and relief cases. • Discipline Coordination: Issue instrument process data (flow, temperature, pressure, level) to instrumentation, equipment datasheets to mechanical, piping class and material requirements to piping, and power and layout requirements to electrical and plant layout. • Technical Support: Participate in drawing reviews and site technical clarifications; assist in resolving process issues that arise during construction.

Activities / Skills • Safety Analysis: Participate in HAZOP studies; learn deviation identification, cause–consequence analysis and risk ranking; support SIL determination with the required process inputs. • Procurement Support: Prepare material requisitions (MR) for equipment and instruments; participate in technical bid evaluation and clarification; verify vendor offers against the technical requirements. • Quality Control: Check design drawings and calculations for compliance with fire protection, explosion protection, environmental and industry standards, producing traceable check records. • Document Management: Assist in compiling as-built documentation and design change records; understand document version control requirements.

Activities / Skills • Reporting: Write the internship final report and perform data analysis on assigned tasks or projects — for example energy consumption comparison, equipment cost composition or calculation deviation statistics. • Collaboration: Work with the process, instrumentation, piping, equipment and electrical disciplines as well as the procurement and construction management teams; track progress and surface risks early. • Task Completion: Complete other auxiliary design tasks assigned by the mentor and proactively consolidate calculation templates or checklists.
